Summary of Grades

EN 10216-2 Materials (seamless steel tubes for pressure applications)

P235GH

  • Characteristics: Non-alloy steel with good weldability and high-temperature resistance. Suitable for pressure vessels and boilers.
  • Applications: Steam boilers, pipelines, heat exchangers.
  • Temperature Range: Up to 450°C.

P265GH TC1/TC2

  • Characteristics: Similar to P235GH but with higher yield strength. TC1/TC2 denotes different levels of testing for quality assurance (e.g. mechanical properties, impact tests).
  • Applications: Pressure vessels, heat exchangers and boiler tubes.
  • Temperature Range: Up to 450°C.

16Mo3

  • Characteristics: Alloy steel with 0.3% molybdenum, which improves high-temperature strength and corrosion resistance.
  • Applications: High-temperature equipment, power plants, heat exchangers.
  • Temperature Range: Up to 550°C.

13CrMo4-5

  • Characteristics: Alloy steel with chromium and molybdenum for enhanced creep resistance and heat resistance.
  • Applications: Power plants, steam boilers, pressure vessels.
    Temperature Range: Up to 600°C.

10CrMo9-10

  • Characteristics: High-performance alloy steel with excellent creep and corrosion resistance at elevated temperatures.
  • Applications: Power plants, industrial boilers, superheater tubes.
  • Temperature Range: Up to 620°C.

EN 10216-3 Materials (Weldable fine-grain structural steels)

P355NH

  • Characteristics: Fine-grain steel with good weldability, high strength and moderate toughness at low temperatures.
  • Applications: Pressure vessels, storage tanks, pipelines.

P355NL1

  • Characteristics: Similar to P355NH but with enhanced toughness at lower temperatures.
  • Applications: Offshore platforms, storage tanks in colder climates.
  • Temperature Range: Down to -50°C.

P460NH TC1/TC2

  • Characteristics: Higher strength fine-grain steel, excellent weldability and suitable for high-pressure applications. TC1/TC2 indicates testing quality levels.
  • Applications: High-pressure vessels, industrial pipelines.
  • Temperature Range: Moderate to high temperatures.

ASTM A106/A335 and ASME Standards

Grade B (A106, A53, API 5L, ASME B36.10/19)

  • Characteristics: Carbon steel with good strength and weldability for moderate temperatures and pressures.
  • Applications: Pipelines, boilers, general structural use.
  • Temperature Range: Up to 400°C.

Grade P5, P9, P11, P12, P22, P91 (A335)

  • Characteristics:
    • P5, P9: Chromium steel with good high-temperature strength and oxidation resistance.
    • P11, P12: Chromium-molybdenum alloy steel with enhanced creep resistance.
    • P22, P91: High-strength alloy steels for very high temperatures and pressures.
  • Applications: Power plants, refineries, steam pipelines.
  • Temperature Range: Up to 600–650°C (varies according to grade).

API 5L Materials (for Pipelines)

X52, X60, X65, X70 (PSL1 or PSL2)

  • Characteristics:
    • PSL1: Standard quality for general applications.
    • PSL2: Higher quality with stricter chemical and mechanical requirements, suitable for demanding environments.
  • Grades increase in strength from X52 to X70.
  • Applications: Oil and gas pipelines, transmission lines.
  • Yield Strength: Ranges from 52,000 psi (X52) to 70,000 psi (X70).

ASTM A333 (Low-temperature applications)

Grade B

  • Characteristics: Carbon steel specifically designed for low-temperature applications, with moderate tensile strength and excellent impact resistance. Highly weldable.
  • Applications: Low-temperature pipelines, cryogenic systems, pressure vessels.
  • Temperature Range: Suitable for temperatures as low as -45°C (-50°F).

Grade 6

  • Characteristics: Low-temperature carbon steel with excellent toughness and weldability.
  • Applications: Cryogenic and low-temperature pipelines, pressure vessels.
  • Temperature Range: Down to -50°C.
