Stainless steel

SB Phönix Ltd. primarily handles sales of seamless stainless steel pipes, fittings and flanges.

Our product portfolio ranges from 3mm (1/8″) OD up to 219mm (8″) OD, and up to 1066mm (42″) for mechanical trepanning.

Summary of Basic Stainless Steel Grades (e.g., 1.4301, 1.4404, 1.4541, and 1.4571)

1.4301 (AISI 304)

  • Composition: 18% chromium, 8% nickel.
  • Characteristics: One of the most widely used stainless steel grades, offering good corrosion resistance in mild to moderately aggressive environments.
  • Applications: Food industry, kitchen equipment, construction.
  • Weldability: Excellent, but may become brittle at low temperatures.

1.4404 (AISI 316L)

  • Composition: 16–18% chromium, 10–14% nickel, 2–3% molybdenum.
  • Characteristics: The addition of molybdenum improves corrosion resistance, particularly in chloride-rich environments. The “L” (Low Carbon) indicates reduced carbon content, which enhances weldability and minimises the risk of carbide precipitation.
  • Applications: Chemical industry, pharmaceutical industry, marine environments.
  • Weldability: Excellent, especially due to the low carbon content.

1.4541 (AISI 321)

  • Composition: Similar to 1.4301, but contains titanium (0.3–0.7%).
  • Characteristics: Titanium combines with carbon, reducing carbide precipitation at high temperatures, which enhances post-weld corrosion resistance.
  • Applications: Heat-resistant applications, such as boilers and heat exchangers.
  • Weldability: Good, particularly in high-temperature environments.

1.4571 (AISI 316Ti)

  • Composition: A modified version of 1.4404 with added titanium (0.3–0.7%).
  • Characteristics: Titanium stabilises the steel at high temperatures, improving post-weld corrosion resistance. Stronger than 1.4404.
  • Applications: Heat- and corrosion-resistant systems, such as in chemical plants and heat exchangers.
  • Weldability: Good, but may require specialised procedures.

Summary

  • 1.4301: Basic stainless steel with good corrosion resistance.
  • 1.4404: Enhanced corrosion resistance in chloride environments.
  • 1.4541: Stabilised steel for high-temperature applications.
  • 1.4571: Combined corrosion and heat resistance.
